Respiratory Relief litter was developed to help control respiratory disease in cats. The litters are available in two formulas – a clumping clay and a silica gel. The litters are low in dust and hypo allergenic with no plant proteins, perfumes or deodorants. The natural essences in the litter along with the low dust help to reduce stress which can be an important factor in controlling Feline Respiratory Disease. Both litter are currently available at PetSmart and other independent retailers.

With the holidays right around the corner it is important to keep your cat safe. There are many toxic plants including mistletoe, holly, poinsettia and lilies that can be toxic to cats. Also, chocolate is toxic for cats as is alcohol. Keep the tinsel and ribbons away from your cat – eating tinsel and ribbon can cause intestinal issues and may warrant a trip to the veterinarian. My Lilac Point boy cat Makeeta loves to eat people food including turkey but remember a bite or two can be fine but don’t overdo. Have a great Holiday Season and until next time don’t forget to hug your cat.

It is that time of year again….when the seasons change urine marking can become more frequent. Your cat may see other cats outside with the weather being nicer and want to mark their territory.

We have discussed urine marking in an earlier blog and some suggestions on how to deal with the problem but I just wanted to add an interesting note that I read about in the The Feline Patient, 4th Edition, Gary D. Norsworthy @2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd. The information was written by Debra F. Horwitz and she indicated to Designate an Acceptable Marking Location. Ms. Horwitz said that an acceptable spraying spot for the cat can be designed by creating an “L” shaped litter box arrangement using two litter boxes: this arrangement uses two litter boxes; one placed vertically (standing on the short end) and one placed horizontally with litter inside the vertical one. An alternative method is to place just one box leaned against the wall at the site of the urine spraying. Some cats may spray only in this area. This is an alternative solution that some owners are willing to live with.

This may be an additional option for some cats that urine mark. Happy beginning of the summer and please remember to hug your cat.

A frequent question that we often get asked is – How often do I totally dump and change my cat litter?

We recommend totally changing the litter out in the cat box every three to four weeks depending on use. Wash your cat boxes with hot water and a mild detergent like Ivory dish soap and then replace with about 3 inches of new litter. Even though our clumping clay litters do clump extremely hard and you are able to remove the clump as a whole there may still be little pieces of litter that may break off of the clump or little pieces of feces that may not totally be removed from the box. Therefore, it is a good idea to change the litter out totally every three to four weeks.

Until next time – please remember to hug your cat.

In February 2011 two new litters for cats with Respiratory Disease will be available at PetSmart and other independent retailers. Following is a Press Release that highlights information about the products:

Englewood, CO – November 1, 2010 – Precious Cat, Inc. announces R & R™ Respiratory Relief Litter with Herbal Essences. R&R™ Respiratory Relief Litter helps control, sneezing, running eyes and coughing in cats with Respiratory Disease.

Respiratory Disease in cats is a frustrating medical condition for cats and owners alike. If the respiratory disease is not treated it can become a chronic condition. R&R™ Respiratory Relief Litters help control respiratory disease in cats because the litters are low in dust and hypo-allergenic with no plant proteins, added perfumes or deodorants. The natural essences in the litter, along with low dust help to reduce stress which can be an important factor in controlling Feline Respiratory Disease.

R&R™ Respiratory Relief is available in two formulas – an amorphous silica gel and clumping clay. The key benefits of each of these litters are that they are 99.9% dust free and hypo-allergenic with no plant proteins. Cats and people with asthma need to avoid dusty litter, plant protein based litter (corn, wheat, pine, paper, etc.), perfumed litters, cigarette smoke, aerosol sprays, polluted environments, stressful situations and exposure to upper respiratory viruses.

You can find R&R™ Respiratory Relief Litter at PetSmart and other independent retailers.
